Wimbledon fashion flashback: Maria Sharapova 2008

Maria Sharapova letterbox

Before her first appearance at the 2008 Championships, Maria Sharapova’s sponsor and clothing supplier Nike announced that her outfit that year had a, “modified racer back for better range of motion” — whatever that means — and that “Maria will also be wearing Tiffany Swing Triple Drop Earrings with diamonds set in platinum, that retail for $5,000.”

Opinion was divided when the number three seed revealed a sheer tuxedo-style top and shorts combination. “I love menswear. I love tuxedo jackets. My trousers are very wide-legged and high-waisted. If there’s a place to do it, it’s Wimbledon,” Sharapova said of the outfit.

Yet not everyone was as impressed by her fashion statement. When Alla Kudryavtseva, ranked 154 in the world, dumped the former champ out of the tournament she said her opponent’s outfit had provided the inspiration.

“I don’t like her outfit,” Kudryavtseva said. “I liked her outfit at the French Open, so probably that’s why. It’s a little too much of everything, of the same thing. She experiments, and I give her credit for that. She’s brave enough to experiment. Sometimes she has good ones, sometimes not.”

What did you think of Maria’s outfit? Something fitting for a fashion queen or a tuxedo-no-no?
